Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) arrives on a remote island off the coast of New England during the 1890s to work alongside veteran lighthouse keeper Tom Wake (Willem Dafoe). However, the pair have a volatile relationship and the solitary nature of the job results in both men becoming suspicious and paranoid of the other.
